Southern Currents Film + Video Collective

Southern Currents is a Toronto-based non-profit organization dedicated to celebrating Latin American arts in all its forms. We host a variety of exciting events every year, including film screenings, panels, creative workshops, live music performances, art exhibitions, and more!

Our commitment lies in championing underrepresented voices in the works and artists we feature. We are dedicated to programming and promoting community-oriented events that not only raise the profile of independent Latin arts but also foster a greater public appreciation for the wide scope of Latin Canadian arts activities.

For over twenty years, we have been proud hosts of the annual aluCine Latin Film + Media Arts Festival, where we showcase the best in independent Latin American cinema from around the world.

In Spring 2022, we hosted the inaugural aluCinArte Multidisciplinary Latin Arts Festival, a dynamic event featuring nightly music and dance performances, cooking workshops, music workshops, film screenings, artist panels, and children's programming. We also hosted the first ever Latin American Media Arts Symposium (LAMAS), which took place in Toronto from October 4th to 7th, 2023!

Southern Currents stands apart as one of the most comprehensive forums for independent Latin media makers in North America, with a deep focus on artworks from Latin artists across Canada and the globe that operate outside of "popular" programming. In exhibiting the best of Latin Canadian and diasporic works, Southern Currents is positioned to place an emphasis on cultural representation within an international context.
